The group show "über kitsch - german contemporaries" takes place at the Vyner Studio in East London, 2nd til 4th September 2010, celebrate the First Thursday with us!

7 young artists from fine art academies in Nürnberg and München combine living tradition with a playful freudian irony to create a happy but broken nostalgia.

The title of the exhibition "über Kitsch" contends two German words used as foreign words in the English language as well. English vogue term "über" has in German a second meaning apart from the smilar in English hyper, extreme, more" which is "about". "Kitsch" is one of the ten most difficult foreign words in the English language.

"über kitsch - german contemporaries" takes the oldfashioned thought of a specific art style being connected to a certain nationality as ironic as kitsch himself - a stereotype, a cliché one can use to show greyscales.

We turn the colour saturation up and don't think of kitsch as opposite to avantgarde (which is a military term anyway) like Adorno or Greenberg rather go with Kundera:"Whenever a single political movement corners power we find ourselves in the realm of totalitarian kitsch."

The exhibition presents colourful camp oil paintings, animation videos and quirky photographies that let your living room die a pink retro death.

Sigmund Freud was from austria, which feels much closer to artists from cozy southern German cities like Munich or Nuremberg than cold Prussian north. Fuck Berlin, Cologne or Leibzig, here comes the south.

Uli Blanchet

Uli Blanchet is the curator of "über kitsch -german contemporaries". He rezcently helped organizing (and exibited) at four exhibitions with international artists' collective Gadje in Dublin and Barcelona and twice in London, at the Rag Factory and at the 3rd Hackney Wicked festival 2010.

He works as art historian in London, where he writes his PhD about consumerism in the work of Banksy and Damien Hirst. Uli works also as a freelance film journalist. He did a Master of professional communication at Univerity of Western Sydney, Australia and a second master in art history, theatre- and film sciences at University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany.

Lisa studied animation in Hamburg and art at Academy of fine arts in Nürnberg und Krakau. Her graduation film in Hamburg „Be Nice“ (2009) was shown at festivals all over the world, including China, Italy, Germany, Portugal and France. She works as illustrator and animator in London.

Eva graduated 2009 from Academy of Fine Arts Munich with Diploma. In her works she mainly deals with kitsch, stereotypes and irony - and her marked preference for fancy stuff as well as for pattern and wallpapers.

Eva’s pieces are always related to her very personal surrounding - her world through her eyes. Often she's interested in showing special relationships between the depicted objects.

Bele Alrechts clay animation video loops are about typical human behaviour, relationships and emotion - the big and the small.

The constant repetition, living through it more than once, without beginning or end, the viewer gets into a kind of katharsis. Seeing it again and again the spectator my change his/her point of view and identification figures.

"My name is Tante Resi, I was born in 1919 near Passau in Bavaria. I'm a great fan of my red puddle astrid, she is really sweet. When i was younger I liked very much to travel with my husband to Ischia, a very nice island. I have a big interest to become immortal... but apart from this things I'm interested in all kind of rumours in my village and of course shopping is a big thing in my life... since 2003 I'm making art with my grandnephew Florian Aschka."

„Finally I’ m going to be immortal!“ This was the sentence I heard my 89-year-old grandaunt Resi say, when I showed her for one of the first times the artworks I do with her as a model. This gave me the feeling as if this was some secret plan of her, which finally will become true.

Since 2003 and especially since I began studying in the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg in 2005 I intensified to work with her. These works make an essential part of my photographic work.

My works of art mostly were inspired by the stories of “Tante Resi” (German for aunt Resi). She has been telling me them since my childhood. For example about such nice things like her beloved holidays in Italy and

Spain

, when she was escaping from the German winter.

But my work is not just showing an old lady in a documentary way, it is about showing up an exciting contrast between documentary parts and exaggerated parts in the pictures. And finally it is my intention to create an atmosphere which gives you a surreal feeling, so that you feel a bit like “Alice in Wonderland”.

Anja Priska, born 1974 in Munich, Germany. Lives and works in London. Graduated as a Masterstudent in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich in 2002.
Many of her new sculptural works and paintings depict lascivious orangutans or baboons or other simians all at play all tugging at the genetic memory found in each of our cells.
Anja Priska´s paintings conjure dream-like dramatic-erotic scenes that are both playful and provocative and often riddled with a subtle deadpan dry humour.
These monkeys – primarily female protagonists – are full of exotic strength and cheeky undertones that give way to a blooming symbolism.

Monkeys being our loose relatives in the evolutionary line make for the ideal choice to pull on the strings of human imagination and association and tell stories that blur the lines between dramas and dreams, fiction and reality, love and war, weakness and strength.
